Sharlene Flynn, 83, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died on Thursday, Jan. 6, 2022. Graveside services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Arrangements are with Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Cedar Rapids.
Surviving relatives are husband, Dr James; three sons, James (Kyle), Kelly and Sean (Andrea); five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brother, Chester; and sisters, Janice, Marcine, Karen, Sherry, Marilyn and Julie.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Maxine Goldsberry; father, Chester Goldsberry; brother, Clifford Goldsberry; sisters, Cheryl Goldsberry and Linda Lynch; three still born grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Sharlene was born on April 26, 1938, in Cedar Rapids. She attended grade and high school at St. Patrick's Cedar Rapids (1956), Mount Mercy College (University) A.A. in Nursing (1959), B.A. in Art (1987), BSN in Nursing (1996). Sharlene completed all courses for MFA at U of Iowa except for final thesis which she could not undertake because of time constraint. She completed her courses and student teaching for her teaching certificate and used her education as a docent at the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art.
She was a nurse at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids and University of Iowa Hospitals. Sharlene was head nurse for General, Chest and Urology surgery in post anesthesia recovery room. In 1962, she was named outstanding Nurse of the Year at University of Iowa Hospitals. Sharlene volunteered in the recovery room at Homestead AFB and Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids.
In addition to her recovery room work, she was on the Cedar Rapids Symphony Board for many years, served as Secretary and later the President of Mercy Medical Center Auxiliary, and was active in PEO for many years. Sharlene was on planning committee for library at Mount Mercy College, where she was instrumental in having computer space incorporated into original plans. She was also on the Cedar Rapids Board of Catholic Education.
She has contributed an endowed scholarship to Mount Mercy University. She was the first student from Mount Mercy to become a finalist in the Iowa College Salon for fine Art in which she showed her work of Racu.
