Richard "Dick" Dale Harken, 90, of Terrace Glen Village in Marion, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Jan. 3, 2022. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
Dick was born in Butler County, Iowa on March 14, 1931, to I.U. and Henrietta (Deters) Harken. He attended several Butler County schools and graduated from Shell Rock High School in 1948. In 1950, he enlisted into the U.S. Navy and attended basic training in Great Lakes, Illinois. After basic training, he was sent to Norfolk, Va. Dick served on the USS Johnston, where he achieved the rank of RM3. Dick was discharged in November 1954. In 1957 he married Marilyn Jean Schmudlach in Cedar Rapids, after a 7-month courtship. He went to work at Collins Radio as a draftsman. Later, Dick became an agent for American Family Insurance before retiring in 1994.
He is survived by his loving wife, Marilyn of Marion, Iowa; children, Lisa (Bob) Huffman of Robins, Iowa, and Michael (Lori) Harken of Waukee, Iowa; grandchildren, Andrew (Casey) Huffman and Carly (Zach) Reisetter; two great-grandchildren, all of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and a sister, Ardys Gentry of Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and three sisters.
