Resolution 2022: We all depend on the success of our neighbors

The last couple of years have brought many challenges. The trials and tribulations have provided an opportunity to reflect on who we are and who we want to be.

As we move into 2022, I feel honored to lead an organization that does so much to care for its neighbors. CommUnity Crisis Services and Food Bank has hundreds of staff and volunteers who show up every day to improve the lives of complete strangers. Our donors support and understand the impact of our work. By providing food, financial assistance, crisis intervention and so much more, we are lifting up our neighbors so they have the opportunity to thrive.

When everyone has what they need to survive and prosper, the entire community benefits. If our mobile crisis outreach counselors visit a teenager in crisis, they may not go to the emergency department, decreasing the wait time for their neighbor experiencing a medical emergency. If our mental health liaison with Iowa City Police Department assists someone entering treatment, they may avoid jail and save taxpayer dollars. When a family is able to access food from our food pantry, their children show up to school with full bellies, leading to fewer behaviors in class so the teacher can focus on all students.

These are just a few illustrations of how interconnected we are. Everyone benefits from a healthy community whose basic needs are met. As you consider who you want to be in 2022, I urge you to be the change and reap the benefits.
