SARAH JANE HORNBECK
Cedar Rapids
Sarah Jane Hornbeck (Sally as she was known by many) passed quietly at Cottage Grove Place, Cedar Rapids.
Sarah was born March 31, 1932, in Cedar Rapids, to George and Catherine Miller. She graduated from Franklin High school, Class of 49. She was married in 1952 to Gene Phillips and welcomed there only son Craig in 1959. She was divorced in 1974. Later she met Jan Hornbeck and was married until his passing in 2017.
Sarah was a lifelong resident of Cedar Rapids. Sally worked for Allis-Chalmers after graduation as a secretary until her son was born. She then took the full-time job of mother. After I was in second grade, she returned to the work force at Armstrongs in the handbag department, where she made several lifelong friends. She retired in 1987.
She started making handmade eggs in the 50s, which she enjoyed doing up tell her later years. She had Easter displays in the front window of Armstrong several years as well as displays inside the store. She would sell them in several shops in the Amana's. After retirement, she started enjoying flea markets and soon started selling at them lasting many years.
She loved gardening and would fill her yard with lovely Flowerbeds and took pride hearing from neighbors say how she had the most beautiful yard in the neighborhood.
She is survived by sister, Sandra Landis of Corvallis Ore., (I found out Sandra died 18 hours after her sister's passing); son, Craig Phillips; daughter-in-law, Ella Phillips; granddaughter, Samantha Phillips; great-grandkids, Veronika and Dianna, all from Cedar Rapids.
She was preceded in death by her father, George Miller; mother, Catherine Miller; sister, Suzanne Marshall; brother, Bill Miller; first husband, Gene Phillips; second husband, Jan Hornbeck; and just last month grandson, Alex Phillips.
She wished to keep helping others by donating her body to the University of Iowa medical research. Celebration of life will be held at a later date and per her wishes, will be a small private gathering.
Those who wish to donate to her memorial please send donations toCedar Rapids Animal Care & Control "Friends Helping Friends" Foundation of Cedar Rapids, 7241 Washington View Parkway SW, Cedar Rapids, IA 52404.
