WALLY EMBRETSON
Newhall
Wally Embretson, 82, passed away peacefully on Friday, Dec. 24, 2021, at the Keystone Nursing Care Center.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 29, at St. John Lutheran Church in Newhall, with the Rev. Steven Rempfer officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, also at the church. Interment will be held at St. John Cemetery in Newhall with graveside military rites.
Wally was born on Oct. 28, 1939, in Postville, the son of Walde and Myrtle (Olson) Embretson. He graduated from Elkader High School, with the class of 1957. On June 10, 1967, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Kuhse at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. Wally served his country in the U.S. Army from 1957 through 1963.
Wally and Dorothy lived in Cedar Rapids, and he worked at Wilson's in Cedar Rapids before he and Dorothy purchased Wally's Grocery in Newhall and made Newhall their home. During the time he owned the store, he also worked at Midland Forge and the Palo Dairy. After selling the store in 1982, he also operated his own power washing business. Wally was active in his community, as a member of the Newhall Jaycees, Lions Club, Community Club and the Central Lutheran School Board. He was an avid Cub's fan. He loved coaching, bowling, golf, cards and marbles, but his favorite activity was following the activities of his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Newhall; children, Dawn Embretson and Michael (Becki) Embretson, all of Atkins; and three grandchildren, Grant, Grace and Anna Embretson.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Marleen Zearley.
