GARY DEAN ETZEL
Cedar Rapids
Gary Dean Etzel, 65, of Cedar Rapids, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 16, 2021.
Gary was born on Jan. 3, 1956, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He graduated in 1974 from Linn-Mar High School and attended the University of Iowa. Most of his working years were spent managing jewelry stores in Cedar Rapids, Coralville, Des Moines, Waterloo and Omaha.
Gary attended church faithfully and enjoyed singing at Victory in Grace. He had such a strong faith in his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and we know he is rejoicing in heaven today.
He was a lifelong Dallas Cowboy fan – surviving a car accident when he traveled to see a game in Texas when he was a teenager. He always enjoyed bowling, especially with his uncle as they were both such competitors, winning many tournaments together. He bowled a couple of 300 games and had several 700 series. He coached Metro Youth Football in Cedar Rapids for over 20 years which is the longest tenure of a coach for that organization. Gary had a big personality with a smile to match.
He was a beloved son, brother, cousin, uncle and great uncle.
Gary's last few years were spent taking care of his mother – as she lost her husband five years ago – taking her to church, getting her medicine or anything she needed. He took great pride in being her companion.
Gary is survived by his mother, Beverly J. Etzel; brother, Steven (Teresa) Etzel; sisters, Kimberly (John) Etzel, Janine (Dave) Wagner and Maureen Denny; and a large extended family.
Gary was preceded in death by his father, Robert Etzel; grandparents, Ralph and Bertha Briles and Clifford and Edith Etzel; uncle, Ralph Briles; and brother-in-law, Brian Denny.
A family only service will be held until a Celebration of Life can be scheduled.
Online condolences may be directed to the family at www.cedarmemorial.com under obituaries.
