David Trachta, 71, of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Dec. 18, 2021.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery on Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2021, with Certified Celebrant Dr. James Coyle officiating.
David graduated from Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids in 1968 before beginning college at the University of Iowa. He was very active in the University marching band. After graduation, he became band director at Urbana Community School, followed with the same position at Lewis Central in Council Bluffs, Iowa, returned to Cedar Rapids to run the family business while beginning work on his master's degree in counseling, and began teaching at College Community School upon completion. Playing his trombone was a great joy in his life and he played a number of groups in the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City areas.
He is survived by his sisters, Dana (Ken) Moomey, Judith (Marion) Vaupel and Karen (Jack) Newhouse; one brother, Raymond (Lenore) Trachta; four nephews, Marcus (Kristin) and Matthew Moomey, and Arnold (Nora) and John Vaupel; five great-nieces; three great-nephews; five great-great-nephews and nieces; and his cats, Sophie and Lucy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo J. and Margaret Trachta; and a great-niece, Erin Moomey.
It is requested that family and friends wear masks for the service.
Please, no flowers. Memorials can be made in David's name at Camp Wapsie Y, ASCPA or a charity of your choice.
The family wants to thank all the doctors, nurses and staff for the passionate care David received while he was at Heritage Care, St. Luke's and St. Luke's Hospice. It was very much appreciated.
