Mark Reiland, 52, of Iowa City, passed away Dec. 8, 2021, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics following a short illness.
Mark was born March 25, 1969, in Cedar Falls, Iowa, to Marvin and Marlys (Mickelson) Reiland. He grew up in Eagle Grove and graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 1987. After graduation, he attended the University of Iowa, earning a degree in economics in 1992. Mark's career in wrestling began as a toddler and continued into high school, where he wrestled for his father. Mark was a two-time state champion and a four-time state place winner before continuing his success at The University of Iowa, where he was NCAA National Champion in 1991 and a two-time NCAA All-American.
Mark began his longtime career as a high school wrestling coach serving as the Iowa City West High assistant wrestling coach from 1992 to 1996, followed by two years as the Solon High School head wrestling coach. Mark became the head wrestling coach at Iowa City West High from 1999 through 2018. Throughout his coaching career he led his teams to numerous dual team state titles, traditional state team titles and Mississippi Valley Conference titles. Mark coached 152 state qualifiers, 26 state champions and 95 state placers throughout his time as a coach.
Wrestling was a big part of his life, but his role as a husband, son, son-in-law, nephew, godfather and cousin was just as important to him. Mark married the love of his life, Michele Musser, in Iowa City on August 7, 1999. The couple enjoyed life together, especially their vacations spent in Cancun, Hawkeye football and tailgating with friends and family.
Throughout his love and success of wrestling, Mark was a real estate appraiser for nearly 30 years at MRS Appraisals, a residential and commercial real estate appraisal business that he and his colleagues established in 1993. He worked at MRS Appraisals at the time of his death.
Mark was inducted into the Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame, the IHSAA Hall of Fame, The Glen Brand Hall of Fame and was awarded the Lifetime Service Achievement Award by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. He currently was the USA Wrestling/Iowa Wrestling Federation State Chairman and National/USA Wrestling Board Vice President, as well as an executive member of USA Wrestling/Coaches Council and USA Wrestling/Junior Division. He served on the USA Wrestling/Junior Olympic Wrestling Committee and the IHSAA Wrestling Advisory Committee.
