Dorothy Nagel, 93, died Saturday, Dec. 4 , 2021, at her home the following a brief illness. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 10, at St. John Lutheran Church, rural Monticello, with interment in Oakwood Cemetery. Pastor Caleb Schewe will officiate at the services. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the church. Masks are highly recommended

Surviving are three children, Linda (Ron) Kahler, Steve (Julie Majerus) Nagel and Gary (Kathy) Nagel, all of Monticello; five grandchildren, Tara (Chad) Kahler, Nick (Mackenzie) Kahler, Jeff (Kylie) Nagel, Kendi (Mitch) Monk and Jaycie (Nathan) Nagel; and nine great-grandchildren, Gavin, Anicka, Beckett, Lennon, Molli, Carver, Laekyn, Maeleigh and Jordan.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 70-plus years, Lavern on March 7, 2021; her parents; a brother, Elmer; and a sister, Alice.

Dorothy Jacobs was born Jan. 2, 1928, in Langworthy, Iowa. She was the daughter of Henry and Augusta Hanken Jacobs. Dorthy graduated from Monticello Community Schools with the Class of 1946. She then went to Coe College for a year and got her teaching certificate. She then started teaching in the rural schools of Wayne Township. Dorothy Jacobs and Laverne Nagel were married Oct. 21, 1950, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The church janitor was their witness and the stock car races that night was the honeymoon.

Dorothy was always a farm wife first. In 1975, Lavern and his son, Gary, started N&N Trailers selling trailers made in Arkansas. Dorothy would take a lady friend along and drive down and pick up a trailer as well as a load of pecans to sell. When customers would come to pick up a new trailer, she would invite them in for a meal before they headed back home. When she and Lavern went to farm shows or the state fair to sell trailers she would make cookies to share with customers. Other vendors knew that Dorothy would have cookies for them as well. Dorothy and Laverne always looked forward to hosting a huge Fourth of July picnic at the farm. They always had an ice cream machine and her homemade hot fudge sauce.

Dorothy was a 4-H leader for the Richland Roc-etts and served on the 4-H committee. For many years, she managed the 4-H food stand at the Great Jones County Fair, serving homemade pies and her wonderful maid-rites. She also ran the lunch room at the Monticello Sale Barn serving the same menu but adding homemade soups.

Dorothy was a lifelong member of St. John Lutheran Church. She was baptized on Jan. 22, 1928, and confirmed her faith on March 29, 1942. She was always involved in the funeral lunch committee.
