ROBERTA “BERTIE" JEAN SANDERCOCK
Lake Ozark, Mo.
Roberta "Bertie" Jean Sandercock, 85, of Lake Ozark, Mo., passed away Monday, Nov. 8, 2021, at Tiffany Springs Senior Living in Kansas City, Mo.
Bertie was born on June 26, 1936, in Washington, Iowa, the daughter of Robert Eugene and Pauline Victoria (O'Loughlin) Arthur.
On June 19, 1958, she was united in marriage to Richard Sandercock, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in Washington, Iowa. They had shared a happy 62 years together at the time of his passing earlier this year on March 10, 2021.
Bertie had a happy childhood in Washington. She had one older sister, Judy, and one younger brother, Bill. Her parents were friendly and socially active. She fondly remembered the many cocktail parties they threw. She graduated from Washington High School in 1954 and then went on to Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. While there, she did a bit of modeling for local print, joined Alpha XI Delta sorority, received the title of May Fete Queen of 1958, and met her future husband, Richard. She graduated with a degree in psychology.
After her marriage to Richard, she obtained her teaching certificate and taught both kindergarten and first grade for four years. She gave birth to two sons, Mark Allen Sandercock and Mike Arthur Sandercock. She embarked on a 30-year journey with her husband during his career as an officer in the U.S. Air Force, traveling all over the U.S. plus a three-year assignment in the Philippines, where she took several trips to Hong Kong, Taiwan and Tokyo. All this time she did volunteer work and was a member of various Air Force boards. Being an officer's wife was a social affair. She threw countless cocktail parties, dinner parties and luncheons, all with aplomb. She was an excellent hostess.
After retiring to Lake Ozark, they traveled, boated and jet skied. They made many good friends there. She loved living on the lake.
She was an avid reader, art collector, dog lover, superior homemaker, a fantastic and loving mother and an all-around wonderful person who was perpetually positive, cheerful and giving with a joyful sense of humor. She will be loved and missed by all those who knew her.
Bertie is survived by her sons, Mark of Kansas City, Mo., and Mike of Phoenix, Ariz.; and her brother, Bill Arthur and wife, Jan, of Grand Island, Neb.
Bertie was preceded in death by her parents, Pauline and Robert of Washington, Iowa; and her sister, Judith Ann Arthur of Montgomery Village, Md.
Interment will be held at a later date in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
