Janet Maher, 58, of Iowa City, passed away Nov. 30, 2021. Janet was born on April 25, 1963, in Iowa City, to Leo and Marilyn (Mellicker) Villhauer.
She graduated from City High School in 1981. While still in high school, Janet was a dishwasher at Mercy Hospital and eventually became a cook for the facility. She worked there for 37 years before starting at Wal-Mart in 1999, where she was one of the very first hires and remained employed there until her passing.
Janet married John "Mike" Maher on Feb. 15, 1997, at Unity Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She enjoyed crocheting, anything wolf-themed and spending time with her family…especially her dogs!
Janet is survived by her husband, Mike; sister, Sandy Schaefer; brother, Chuck (Bonnie) Villhauer; brother-in-law, C.J. (Angie) Maher; sisters-in-law, Joanie (Brian) Hanel and Judy (Roger) Campbell; her niece, Tracie Villhauer; as well as several other nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, John Villhauer; sister, Cindy Villhauer; brother-in-law, Steve Schaefer; and sister-in-law, Joyce Bender.
Per Janet's request, cremation has been accorded and there will be a Celebration of Life at a later date. Inurnment will be held at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel. The family would like to thank Tracie Villhauer for allowing Janet and Mike to reside at her home and helping to care for Janet while derecho damage is still being repaired to their own home. Also a special thank-you to Sandy Schaefer for all of the extra special care you gave to Janet while she was in hospice. You are a very loving sister.
