Gary Alan Greenwalt, 71, died peacefully Thursday, Nov. 25, 2021.
Graveside committal with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, at Oak Hill Cemetery, Coralville, with the Rev. Roger Dykstra officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Holden Comprehensive Center c/o University of Iowa Foundation, 1 W. Park Rd., Iowa City, IA 52242.
Gary was born Jan. 5,1950, in Litchfield, Ill., the son of Alan and Athel (Williams) Greenwalt. He was a graduate of Eastern Illinois University, where he received a Master's degree in Education. On Aug. 22, 1970, Gary married Donna Downes at Scott Air Force Base in Belleville, Ill.
Gary served in the U.S. Air Force for 21 years (during the Vietnam and Iraq era). He retired in 1992 with the rank of Major. Following retirement, Gary was employed with the Rapid City, S.D. Community Schools. Gary and Donna lived in Rapid City for 23 years. In 2012 they moved to Coralville to be closer to their daughter and her family.
Time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren, was most important to Gary. He enjoyed puzzles and liked to read.
Gary is survived by his wife, Donna; their daughter, Christine (Joseph) Hillberry of Iowa City, and their children, Timothy and Katelynn; his sister, Lisa (Clinton) McGlothlin of Springfield, Ill.; sister-in-law, Hollie Greenwalt of Litchfield, Ill.; and nieces and nephews.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Timothy Edward; and brothers, Steve Dale and Edward Ray.
