Sharon Kay Ullrick was called home at 1:45 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2021, with her son holding her hand.
She was born to Wanda and Virgil Ullrick on June 9, 1943, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She was a graduate of Jefferson High School in 1961. She was a dedicated worker, having been employed by E. Cohn & Sons, Collins Radio, Russo's Restaurant and retired in 2005 as a 30-year veteran of the CRCSD.
She belonged to First Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids and while there was a Sunday school teacher and choir mother. Additionally, she was a den mother for her son's Cub Scout troop. She was an avid crossword puzzler, an advocate for the abolition of "puppy mills," a lifelong horse lover and horse racing fan and a voice for voiceless pets needing to be adopted into loving homes.
Her special pets kept her agile, her dogs, Tula and Oliver and her one-year-old cat, Ridgeway. As late as 2017, she loved working out and drinking coffee with her gym friends, "the girls": Val, Kathy, Jeri and Ann. However, what she valued most was spending time with her only son, Eric.
Sharon was preceded in passing by her great-grandparents, Phoebe and Charles; beloved mother; her father; her aunt, Mildred; her uncles, Harold and Gib; her cousin, Trudie; and her very special pets, Lucy, ET, Zoey and Sam.
She is survived by her son, Eric; her half-brother, Steve; her half-sister, Sue; and her cousins, Terry, Linda and Ashley.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 3, at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories, Cedar Rapids. Private inurnment will take place at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. The family respectfully requests those attending the visitation and service to please wear a face mask.
