CEDAR RAPIDS — A two-point season-opening loss to Marion was a good sign.
But ...
“There are no moral victories,” Williamsburg Coach Austin Mullikin said. “We really wanted to come out of this week 1-1.”
Taylor Winegarden hit six 3-pointers in a 22-point masterpiece, and Williamsburg exploded for 27 fourth-quarter points in a 64-52 victory over Clear Creek Amana at the Rivalry Saturday girls’ basketball event at Johnson Hall.
“In warm-ups, I felt on,” said Winegarden, a senior. “As a team, we drive. We attack. They kicked out, and I was set up and ready to shoot.”
Winegarden’s six treys tied a Rivalry Saturday record, set by Ballard’s Ally Jensen in 2008. The Raiders’ 10 3-pointers also matched an event record.
The Raiders’ 27 fourth-quarter points were the most in a quarter; Highland scored 26 in the first quarter against Lone Tree in 2004.
Williamsburg (1-1, 1-1 Wamac) trailed through the majority of the first three quarters and was looking at a 40-37 deficit entering the fourth. It took the lead with just over four minutes remaining.
“We always seem to go back and forth with them,” Winegarden said. “In the locker room, we talked about defense. That’s how you’re going to win games.”
Freshman Carly Rich added 14 points for the Raiders. Teagan Schaefer added 11.
Ava Locklear paced CCA (1-1, 1-1) with 16 points.
