Ardell George Johnson of Iowa City died Nov. 12, 2021, surrounded by his loving family after a brief illness.
He was born Dec. 2, 1930, to George and Alvina (Lenz) Johnson. Growing up on a farm southeast of Iowa City, he attended country school and graduated from Lone Tree High School in 1948.
Ardell served in the U.s. Marine Corps, stationed in Japan. He was a serviceman for Iowa Illinois Gas & Electric for 35 years, retiring in 1994.
He enjoyed traveling in his retirement years. In 2007 Ardell was recognized by the Iowa City Press Citizen as a Neighborhood Helper.
Ardell lived at the Legacy Ridge Retirement Community for the last 3 1/2 years. He enjoyed reading non-fiction and doing cross word puzzles.
Ardell is survived by his children, Peg (John) Raab, David (Deb) Johnson, Kathy (Gary) Shemanski, all of Iowa City and son, Scott (Laura) Johnson of Boone, Iowa; along with six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Dale (Ardath) Johnson of Iowa City.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Geraldine Watkinson; brother-in-law, Robert; as well as former wives, Marilyn and Ardith Johnson.
The family would like to thank the staff at Mercy Hospital for their compassionate care.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to service. Burial will be in the Lone Tree Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Iowa City Hospice.
