Joseph Jay Wolfer died Friday, Oct. 29, 2021, in Sierra Vista, Ariz., following a short illness.
Joe was born Aug. 20, 1943 in Washington County Hospital, the son of Rose Elaine (Rollo) Wolfer and George Stephen "Steve" Wolfer. He grew up in Washington, attending kindergarten at the Eureka country school, first through eighth grades at St. James Catholic School, and graduated from Washington High School in 1961.
He was married to Mary Kathryn Doolin in 1963 and they had two children, son Tim and daughter Kristine. He was a Williamsburg, Iowa, farmer for many years. The farm produced corn, soy beans, pork and large scale egg production. Joe also was a salesman for Yoder's Feed, and after moving to Arizona, a long distance truck driver for several years.
Joe later married Carol Rathmell Lowe, who also was from Washington, Iowa. The toured all 50 states during their work as telecom technicians. They had many friends and enjoyed traveling, playing cards and being by the pool.
He was a proud member and officer in the Washington County National Guard and was the Commander for several years before moving to Arizona. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and of the Catholic Church in Sierra Vista.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife. He is survived by his son, Timothy; daughter, Kristine; grandson, Jason Wolfer; and granddaughter, Audrey Bellmore; five brothers, Mike, Stephen, Dennis (Debbie), Greg and Charlie; nephew, Doug Wolfer; and nieces, Deanna, Denise, Donna, Danielle and Dawn.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 19, 2021, at Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church.
