Larry Sutherland, 82, of Pflugerville, Texas, formerly of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, beloved father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, lost his battle to cancer Nov. 5, 2021.
He was born June 21, 1939, in Sioux City, Iowa, to parents, Jessie Pearl (Sparks) and Dean Sutherland, and grew up in Des Moines, Iowa. After high school, Larry joined the Navy and spent 23 years in the service. He was stationed in many locations, including Keflavik, Iceland, and Norfolk, Va. After retiring from the service as a Senior Chief Petty Officer E8, Larry joined Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for 24 years. Larry was a devoted family man. He was a true engineer, and an avid Ham radio operator who also enjoyed the latest technology. He enjoyed reading, working on puzzles and camping in his Winnebago.
Larry is survived by his children: son, Alfred (Ray) and daughter-in-law, Kathy Kimbrough; daughter, Ruth and son-in-law, Jeff Williams; daughter, Diane and son-in-law, Forrest Rogness; grandchildren, Justin and Amanda Hepker, Danielle and William Hatch, Derrick (Olivia Bates) Williams and Anna Rogness; and four great-grandchildren, Maddux Hepker, Mason Hepker, Dexter Hatch and Sylvia Hatch; as well as his brothers, James (Cheryl) Sutherland and Edward (Karen) Sutherland. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Thorhildur Sutherland; and youngest son, Gunnar Jon Kimbrough.
Service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday Nov. 11, at St Phillip's United Methodist, 16321 Great Oaks Dr., Round Rock, TX 78681. Larry will be buried at a later time in Iceland.
