Nadia died peacefully Nov. 6, 2021, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics surrounded by her loving family following a long and courageous battle with heart disease that began when she contracted rheumatic fever as a young girl. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 12, at Lensing Oak Hill Funeral Service, 210 Holiday Rd., Coralville, with the Very Rev. Father Jeff Shaheen officiating. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, before the funeral. The service will be made available by way of Zoom. The link will be on Nadia's obituary page at www.lensingfuneral.com under her Tribute Wall. Family committal services will be held at St. George Orthodox Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
Nadia was born in Haifa, Palestine, on Dec. 1, 1943, to Chakib and Alice Khal. She became a refugee when she was five and her family fled Palestine when they lost their home and possessions in Haifa during the 1947-1948 war. Her family settled in Cairo, Egypt, where she attended the Immaculate Conception school. She traveled frequently to Beirut, Lebanon, to visit extended family who had also relocated after the war.
She immigrated to the U.S. in 1970 to live with other siblings who had already immigrated to Iowa City. She worked for Moore Business Forms for 15 years and held many positions there.
Nadia was an accomplished oil and watercolor painter, and she traveled to Italy to view the works of famous artists. She had a flair for interior decorating and could transform a room from plain to beautiful. She enjoyed creating flower arrangements and gifted many to close friends and family.
She was a lifelong advocate for persons with hearing loss and was a member of Hearing Loss Association of America HLAA/SHHH and the Sertoma Club. She was a devout Christian and was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Cedar Rapids.
Nadia is survived by her four siblings, Doris Abboud (Dr. Francois, Iowa City), Olga Sassine, (Iowa City), George Khal (Barbara, Iowa City) and Anthony Khal (Westfield, Ind.); her Godson, Kaiden Khal (Westfield, Ind.); her former spouse, Roger Ellerhoff; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother-in-law, Nagui Sassine.
