Les was born Oct. 14, 1938, in Hesper Township in rural Winneshiek County, the son of Lester Philip and Helen "Blegen" Young. Les graduated in 1956 from Spring Grove High School in Minnesota. From there Les' journey steered him to the armed forces to serve his country. Les enlisted into the Navy, where he honorably served from 1956-1958.

Les worked for Wilson Meat Packing Plant. He also served as a firefighter for the city of Cedar Rapids and was the owner and operator Soot Free Chimney Sweep.
Les loved the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Minnesota Vikings. He was an avid fisherman. Les also enjoyed playing cards, but his greatest passion was spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife, Carolyn; his children, Michelle Young, Mike (Mary) Young, Deneen (Paul) Ritter, Jamie Trpkosh and her fiance, Wally Glass and Tim (Jessie) Trpkosh; his grandchildren, Matt, Philip, Amber, Jordan, Kayle, Tyler, Brooke, Austin, Ella, Hadley and Cora; great-grandchildren, Keaton, Bentley, Ellie, Finnegan, Rhett and Robert; and brother, Mark (Mary Jayne) Young.
