Raymond Joseph Vermeersch passed away in Mountain Home, Ark., at the age of 91, on Sept. 27. 2021. He was born on Aug. 8, 1930, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
He is survived by his wife, Cay Vermeersch (his high school sweetheart); brother, Charles Vermeersch; sister, Rita Houser; sons, Tom (Liz) Vermeersch, David Vermeersch and John (Mary) Vermeersch; three stepchildren, Dave and Doug Durham and Debra Logan; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marcella (Boland) Vermeersch; sisters, Marie Ahrens and Elaine Gaines; his grandson, Andrew Vermeersch; and daughters-in-law, Denise (Diamond) Vermeersch and Kandy (Greer) Vermeersch.
Ray grew up in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War as an airplane mechanic in Okinawa. He graduated with a B.S. in Industrial Engineering from Iowa State University. He worked for various companies as an engineer, living in Milwaukee, Wis., Burlington, Iowa, and Grand Rapids, Mich. Upon retiring, he moved to Mountain Home, Ark., to enjoy the nice weather. Ray enjoyed wood working and made several beautiful pieces of furniture, was very proud of his elaborate ship models he built and enjoyed golfing. Ray was a Green Bay Packer fan and enjoyed watching sports.
Ray's wishes are to be cremated and buried in Fairfax, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Peter the Fisherman Church or to any Hospice organization.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, at St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church. Arrangements are under the care of Roller Funeral Home.
