EMILIE B. STULC
Ballstone Lake, N.Y.
Emilie B. Stulc, 97, of Ballstone, Lake, N.Y., passed away peacefully on Oct. 22, 2021. She was born in Teplitz, Czechoslovakia, and was the daughter of the late Anton and Maria (nee Friehe) Vanca. Her father had been severely injured as a
soldier in the Austro-Hungarian army in World War I and died while Emilie was quite young. Her mother established a bakery in their hometown, and Emilie was brought in the German sector of Czechoslovakia, the Sudetenland. This area was subsequently invaded by Germany under Hitler in 1939. Due to her heritage, Emilie was involuntarily conscripted to serve the German civil defense for the entirety of the war, placed in Berlin during the bombing campaigns. Meanwhile, her family home was only two miles from the infamous Theresienstadt concentration camp set up by the Nazis. Despite harrowing experiences, she survived the war, and shortly afterward met and married Jaroslav (Jerry) Stulc, another survivor and minister's son who was incarcerated in a concentration camp during the war due to his dual American/Czech citizenship. With the fall of the Czech democracy to Communism in 1948, she and her family fled to the United States, settling in Iowa where her husband had distant relatives, his mother having been born in Iowa.
Emilie was a bookkeeper for the Board of Education for Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and retired in 1985. After her husband died, she moved to Ballston Lake to be with her only child and his wife. Raised a Catholic, she accepted the Protestant faith upon marrying her husband. Emily had a good sense of humor and enjoyed singing, cooking, reading, knitting, art and music. Even in her nineties, she still insisted on having a cold beer with her supper.
She was the beloved wife of the late Jerry Stulc; dear mother of Dr. Gerald Peter and Dr. Diana Minassian Stulc; and survived by two grandsons, Alexan and Evan Stulc; and a niece, Elizabeth Seibt of Ulm, Germany.
Funeral service will be held private at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Community, Hospice of Saratoga County.
With confidence, the family has placed their trust in the loving care of the Townley & Wheeler Funeral Home, 21 Midline Road, Ballston Lake N.Y., and they encourage you to view Emilie's Book of Memories at www.townleywheelerfh.com.
