Richard M. Luerkens, 75,
of Toddville, Iowa, formerly of Central City, was carried home to his heavenly Father on Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2021. In agreement with his wishes, cremation has taken place. The family will greet friends and family from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 22, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion, where a Scripture service will begin at 3:30 p.m. Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, at the funeral home with Deacon Dan Hoeger officiating. Private inurnment for the immediate family will follow at Oak Shade Cemetery in Marion, Iowa.
Richard was born Jan. 18, 1946, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the oldest of 12 children to William D. and Jeannette E. (Lane) Luerkens. He was united in marriage to Bonnie J. Henderson on Aug. 17, 1963, in Marion. Richard worked as a line foreman with Alliant Energy for more than 40 years, until his retirement. He served as a union steward for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 204. Richard was a member of St Patrick's Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, the Fraternal Order of the Eagles and HOG Harley Owners Group. He enjoyed riding his Harley motorcycle, being a family uber driver when needed and enjoying a Diet Busch every now and then. Richard will be remembered for the wisdom, advice and unconditional love he gave his family. You could often see him yelling at the TV during political election season, and Richard was always helping families in need. He was his family's superman. Richard will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 58 years, Bonnie Luerkens; four daughters, Andrea Luerkens of Cedar Rapids, Shelly (Bruce) Kreutner of Shellsburg, Iowa, Trisha (Jason) Willenborg of Central City, Iowa, and Barbara Nannelli of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Melisa Sutton, Justine Sutton, Candace Sutton, Drew Kreutner, Paige (Brandon) McMurrin, Blake Willenborg, Benjamin Willenborg, Bristol Nannelli and Aubri Nannelli; seven sisters; three brothers; and many nieces and nephews.
Richard was preceded into eternal life by his parents, William and Jeannette Luerkens; and one sister, Andrea Luerkens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Richard's memory may be directed to the family to be designated later.
