CAROL E. CALKINS
Iowa City
Carol E. Calkins, 84, of Iowa City, passed away at her home on Friday, Oct. 15, 2021, with her family beside her.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, at St. Bridget's Cemetery in Nolan Settlement. Instead of flowers and plants, the family suggests memorials to The Salvation Army or Friends of the Animal Center Foundation. Lensing
Funeral & Cremation Service is handling arrangements.
Born Dec. 25, 1936, Carol arrived as a blessed Christmas gift to her parents, William and Lena (McGill) Maher. Raised in Johnson County, she graduated from high school and attended McCabe Business College in Iowa City.
On Oct. 7, 1967, Carol was united in marriage to Willis G. Calkins in Iowa City. The couple enjoyed nearly 41 years of marriage at the time of Willis's death in September of 2008.
Carol raised her family, maintained the family homestead and also worked for the Iowa City Public Library in the circulation department.
She was an avid reader, bird watcher and nature lover. Watching the old Western TV shows and movies gave her great enjoyment. Carol loved spending time with family, but above all, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren meant more than everything to her.
Carol is survived by her sons, Bill Calkins of Iowa City and Seth Calkins (Deana) of Iowa City; grandchildren, Tyler (Jessica), Tanner, Rebecca and Hunter; great-grandchildren, Brooklynn, Jeremiah and Lillian Rose; her beloved cat Eppie, Bill's dog Daisy and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Willis.
