James K. Washburn, 95, of Alburnett, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 7, 2021. Family will greet friends and family from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 11, 2021, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion, Iowa. A graveside service with military honors by the Iowa Army National Guard Honors Detail will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2021, at Dunkard Cemetery in Midway, Iowa.
James was born on Sept. 17, 1926, in Rural Fayette County, Iowa, the son of Gay and Elizabeth (Briney) Washburn. He graduated from Buck Creek High School and went on to serve honorably in the United States Army during WWII from 1944 to 1946. James was united in marriage to Rita M. Stanek on March 15, 1948, in Missouri. He worked for Wilson Foods for over 30 years before retiring. James was able to go on an Eastern Iowa Honor Flight on his 90th birthday and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
James is survived and lovingly remembered by his son, Don (Dolores) Washburn of Cedar Rapids; daughter, Susan (Mike) Kinkead of Hiawatha; sons, Ron (Deb) Washburn of Cedar Rapids, Ralph Washburn of Alburnett and Ray Washburn of Nichols, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gay and Elizabeth Washburn; wife, Rita Washburn; daughter, Cathy Washburn; and six siblings, Edwin, Everett, Maxine, Genevieve, Margaret and George.
The family would like to thank the staff at Hiawatha Care Center and Dr. Mary Ann Nelson for their loving care of James.
