MARION — A major Marion intersection will be closed to traffic beginning Monday.
The intersection of Seventh Avenue and 10th Street will be closed for around six weeks, as construction and utility work continues on the Uptown Streetscape project.
City Engineer Mike Barkalow said the project is coming along and sections of Seventh Avenue should reopen around Thanksgiving.
“We’re getting close,” Barkalow said. “Working ahead to complete this work in the 10th Street intersection will minimize the impacts to traffic on Seventh Avenue next year when we begin work on phase two of the project.”
The first phase of the $6.9 million project began in July. The work is being funded by local-option sales tax dollars and bonding through the city’s capital improvement program.
The project includes reconstruction of the roadway and sidewalks and the replacement of water and sanitary and storm sewer lines on Seventh Avenue, as well as side streets between Eighth and 12th streets between Sixth and Eights avenues.
Work also includes the addition of a new Uptown Plaza on 11th Street. The plaza will stretch from the Uptown Artway south across Seventh Avenue.
The plan is to reopen Seventh Avenue at 12th Street to provide an alternate route across the avenue while the 10th Street intersection is closed, but there may be some overlap in the timing, the city said in a news release.
Uptown businesses remain open.
“We’re so appreciative of those who continue to show up in support of the business community,” Uptown Marion District Director Brooke Prouty said. “There’s no better time than the present to support local.”
CeMar Trail
In addition, paving along the CeMar Trail is expected to begin Tuesday. The paved section will connect the trail to the Seventh Street/Seventh Avenue roundabout,
The paving will cause intermittent, brief closures on the stretch of trail along Sixth Avenue behind the Country Kitchen Cafe, a city news release said.
