On Nov. 2, I will be casting my vote for Nancy Humbles to retain a seat on the Cedar Rapids Community School District's school board.
Nancy's voice is imperative. What she has done and will continue to do for our community is exactly what others in administration before her tried to implement. For example, Dr. Tom White, former Director of Human Resources for the CRCSD and one of this district's first Black employees, knew that Black students needed educators in front of them who look like them, while upgrading our district's technology.
Following in Dr. White's footsteps, Nancy founded the "Not Without Me" form to expand an open- door process for closing the 'achievement gap' for children of color, specifically African-Americans, while welcoming voices and opinions from the community.
She inherited rules and regulations that govern the procedures on our school board.
While working within this system she was able to address to the challenges of academic improvement while leading during a once -in-generation global pandemic and the derecho.
Being the “face” of the school board is not necessarily the face of the district, there needs to be more work completed before that can happen.
Nancy Humbles' presence and dedication to all our students in the district reaffirms that her awareness and experiences are necessary in encouraging a district- wide culture that empowers excellence and innovation while adhering to the district's motto "Every Learner, Future Ready." I encourage all readers to cast your vote for Nancy Humbles.
