Hinson misleads on tax changes

In her Gazette guest column on Sept. 26, U.S. Rep. Ashley Hinson clearly wanted to sow fear among the farming community with her misleading comments about President Joe Biden’s American Families Plan. Hinson used innuendoes and false scenarios in an attempt to scare farmers into believing that they will be taxed off of their land.
Under Biden’s plan, family-owned farms are allowed to defer taxes as long they continue to be owned and operated by family members. She knows this, of course, or should.
The American Families Plan is designed to correct the existing loophole that the ultrawealthy can use to avoid paying their fair share of taxes. Why wouldn’t Hinson want those making millions, even billions, in capital gains to pay tax on that income?
Instead of divisive and misleading comments, I hope that Rep. Hinson will represent all Iowans and all Americans, and work to see that the loophole is closed. We pay our taxes. Those at the top should too.
