James Smith, 85, of Vinton, Iowa, passed away peacefully at his home following a long-term illness. Private family graveside services will be held at Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service assisted the family.
James was born Feb. 15, 1936, in Hot Springs, Ark., the son of Vernon and Ellen (Prier) Smith. He graduated from high school in Vancouver, Wash., and graduated from Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids. James worked as a service manager at Zimmerman, McGrath and Allen's prior to his retirement.
James is survived by his wife, Donna Smith; siblings, Curtis Smith of Nevada and Silvia Wesolowski of Oregon; children, Rick (Maria) Smith and Terry Smith, all of California; stepchildren, Lesa (Gabor) Szekely of Missouri, Tina Newcomb of New Hartford, Iowa, William (Angela) Behm of Vinton, Iowa, and Charles (Kathryn) Behm of Hawaii; and many grandchildren.
James was preceded by his parents, Vernon and Ellen Smith; son, Michael James Smith; siblings, Carl, Hazel and Ann; and sons-in-law, Tommy Newcomb and David Hasenjaeger.
