BERT NIDEY BROOK
Iowa City
Bert Nidey Brook quietly and serenely passed away in her sleep on Monday, Sept. 20, 2021, while doing what she loved most, visiting a dear friend in a beautiful place. Her body has been cremated.
Bert was born in Cedar Rapids on June
3, 1957, to John and Trudy (Vandermeer) Nidey. Her young life was spent on the family farm near Williamsburg before her family moved to Iowa City, where she graduated from Iowa City West High in 1975. On March 4, 1978, she married Bryan Brook at Danforth Chapel in Iowa City. Bert had a long and successful career at American College Testing (ACT) and a second, equally successful career at The College Board, from which she retired in June 2021. She looked forward to her retirement and was very excited to help others document their memories through her new business, "Preserving Your Story," as well as continuing her volunteer work with Iowa City Hospice, TRAIL of Johnson County and Miracles in Motion.
Bert was full of love, life, compassion and was a dear friend and mentor to many. Her family meant the world to her and she surrounded herself with many wonderful friends and colleagues, who also became part of her family. She was well known for her warm, all-encompassing and lengthy hugs, something she and her friends all missed greatly during the pandemic. Bert was the epitome of love and friendship. Her smile would light up any room.
Bert is survived by her husband, Bryan; brothers, Frank (Shannon) Nidey, Floyd (Bev) Nidey and Mark (Sue Mellecker) Nidey; along with many nieces and nephews, whom she loved dearly and championed throughout their lives, as well as many, many treasured friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
A celebration of Bert's life and time for sharing will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17, at Shelter No. 6 in lower City Park in Iowa City. The family requests that all attendees be aware of Covid and strongly encourages everyone to mask, wash hands and maintain social distance. If you would like to honor Bert with a monetary donation, these can be directed to Iowa City Hospice or TRAIL of Johnson County in her name. To truly honor Bert's life, hug your family members and friends and hold them close. To share a thought, memory or condolence with her family, please visit the funeral home website at www.gayandciha.com.
