Iowa City High had Zeus, thanks to its win over Iowa City Liberty. The Little Hawks possessed the Little Cy-Hawk trophy after beating Ames. Friday night, they took back The Boot from Iowa City West — emphatically, with a 56-7 win.
That was just one game we were covering Friday night for Week 5 of the Iowa high school football season. Find all the area scores and complete coverage below.
City High (5-0) cracked the Class 5A top 10 this week at No. 6, and you can see how the rest of our ranked teams fared Friday night here.
5A No. 6 Iowa City High 56, Iowa City West 7
How good, precisely, is this team?
“We’re better than good, man,” Iowa City High running back Darren Richardson said. “We’re great.”
No argument here. And, presumably, none from their archrival.
Class 5A sixth-ranked City High stung Iowa City West with a 556-yard offensive attack and whipped the Trojans, 56-7, Friday night at Bates Field.
West had won five straight games in this series, including a pair of one-sided victories (56-20 and 35-7) last year.
But Friday, The Boot was most certainly on the other foot.

5A No. 9 Linn-Mar 65, Cedar Rapids Jefferson 0
The Lions keep rolling. For the first time since 2011, Linn-Mar is 5-0.
The Class 5A ninth-ranked Lions jumped all over a depleted Cedar Rapids Jefferson team, running away with a 65-0 victory Friday night at Kingston Stadium.
The fast start is a welcome departure from the 1-5 season Linn-Mar endured last year. A strong defense has led the way. Jefferson couldn’t budge the Linn-Mar defensive front. The J-Hawks finished with negative-21 yards of offense and no first downs.

4A No. 4 Cedar Rapids Xavier 31, Cedar Rapids Washington 0
You wondered how a football team that hardly ever loses in the regular season would respond to actually losing in the regular season.
The answer in Cedar Rapids Xavier’s case would be fine. Just fine.
The Saints were stifling defensively and pulled away from a tight game with a strong offensive second half to take apart Cedar Rapids Washington, 31-0, Friday night at Saints Field.
Xavier (4-1), ranked fourth in Class 4A, lost to No. 1 North Scott at home last week, 20-8. That was just its second loss in its last 53 regular-season games.
But the rebound was strong. The start to district play was strong.

Western Dubuque 41, Marion 0
The stats for Western Dubuque’s Spencer Zinn were impressive.
The Bobcat senior tailback tallied four touchdowns for the second straight game and rushed for 124 yards on 16 carries in Friday night’s 41-0 triumph over Marion in the Class 4A District 2 opener for both teams at Thomas Park.
That didn’t stop Western Dubuque quarterback Jack Clemens from giving his teammate a little dig after the game.
“We gave him a little bit of a hard time because he stole two of our receivers’ touchdowns,” Clemens said with a smile on his face. “They got tripped up just short of the goal line but it is what it is.”
Zinn had the table set twice on long completions from Clemens to Daviyon Gaston for 67 yards and another of 66 yards to Nick Bryant.

Benton Community 20, 3A No. 9 Mount Vernon 13
Benton Community produced the big drive when it needed it most.
The Bobcats went 65 yards on 10 plays, burning 4:40 off the clock for the decisive touchdown with a little more than a minute left.
Colin Buch rolled in from 15 yards out to give Benton Community a 20-13 Homecoming victory over Class 3A ninth-ranked Mount Vernon in the district opener Friday night at Bobcats Stadium.
“We were setting it up with the downhill run with (Jacob) Brecht,” Buch said. “We were watching their guys creep in and creep in. We knew after the last run that Brecht had it was time to pull the trigger and go get in the end zone.
“Credit to my guys up front. They did an awesome job blocking. All I had to do was get in the end zone and not fumble. It was a great feeling overall.”

A No. 6 North Linn 20, South Winneshiek 6
Sometimes the smallest tweak can make all the difference.
Say to safe, North Linn’s offensive tweak has paid dividends this season.
Spectators saw a lot of “Haughenbury-to-Hilmer” Friday night as the sixth-ranked Lynx (5-0) outlasted South Winneshiek, 20-6, in a gritty, Class A District 4 battle.
But it hasn’t always been Haughenbury-to-Hilmer.
Following a 2-6 season in 2020, the Lynx decided to make a switch and move junior Tate Haughenbury to quarterback and senior Austin Hilmer to receiver. The move actually came toward the end of the 2020 season, but it’s been particularly effective in 2021.

Decorah 33, Mason City 14
Kennan Tyler passed for two touchdowns and ran for two more as the Vikings rolled at home.
Tyler connected with Zach Jermier for 28 yards out to give Decorah a 7-0 lead. After Mason City tied the game on a 72-yard strike from Kale Hobart to Carter Thomas, the Vikings scored three more times in the first half — on a 10-yard run by Jaden Baker, a Tyler run of 3 yards and a 2-yard pass from Tyler to Jacob Pipho.
Tyler down the sideline for a 46 TD run in the second half.

4A No. 1 North Scott 21, Iowa City Liberty 0
The Lancers exploded for all three of their touchdowns in a span of a little more than five minutes in the second quarter to topple the Lightning.
Oliver Hughes caught eight passes for 144 yards and made several big plays defensively for North Scott.
The Lancers managed to hold Liberty running back Darius Willis-Newell to just 76 yards on 21 carries. Willis-Newell had 306 yards last week in a one-point loss to Clear Creek Amana, but after getting 41 yards on the first four plays of the game Friday, the Lancers handled him.
