Lyle D. Matthews, 86, of Marion, passed Sept. 14, 2021, at Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House. Services will be Sept. 20, 2021, at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories, officiated by Blair A'Hearn, M. Div. Visitation

Lyle was born Sept. 12, 1935, in Udell, Iowa, the son
of John M Matthews and Viola (Glessner) Matthews. His birth mother passed on his 6th birthday. In 1944 his father married Alma Knake, who became his forever mom.
Lyle married Patricia Sramek on April 5, 1959. They had two sons, John and Tim.
He is survived by his wife, Pat; son, John (Lizabette) Matthews; and grandchildren, Holly (Dylan) Applegate and Jacy; special cousins whom he loved like siblings; and special nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.
He graduated from Wilson High School, attended Coe College and the University of Iowa. He served four years in the Air Force. He started his career as a plumber with Modern Piping. He later became an estimator and 1/3 partner of A'Hearn Plumbing & Heating. He was proud of his profession and his partial ownership in a plumbing company. He was a member of the Mechanical Contractors of Iowa and served as chairman for a year. In 2000 he retired and sold his share of ownership back to the A'Hearn family.
Lyle enjoyed the Hawkeyes, Bears and Cubs. In earlier years he loved to bowl, play slow-pitch, and waterski. Pat and Lyle were members of Elmcrest CC and played a lot of golf. He was a member of the executive board for some years. Family and many friends were his cherished blessings.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Viola; father, John and mother, Alma; son, Tim; granddaughter, Heitina; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, mother-in-law, several aunts, uncles, cousins, a niece and a nephew.
Thank you to the Hall Perrine Cancer Center, Dr. Ann Stroh and her staff, Dr. Janet Merfeld and her staff for their care and compassion. Thank you to the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House who showed so much compassion.
