JERALD “JERRY” ANDREW ANDERSON
Cedar Rapids
Jerry Anderson passed away Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2021, at the age of 92. He looked to the day when he would be absent from his failing body and present with the Lord!
Visitation for family and friends will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 16, at Cedar Memorial Cemetery. A memorial service to celebrate Jerry's life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 17, with lunch following at the Church on Northland in Cedar Rapids.
Jerry was born on Oct. 24, 1928, to Paul and Elsie (Whitacre) Anderson in Iowa City. He grew up in and graduated from high school in West Liberty. He then graduated from Grinnell College as a member of Phi Beta Kappa. After serving in the U.S. Army, Jerry worked at the United Fire & Casualty company in the underwriting department until retirement in 1990 as an assistant vice president. He worked at the Omaha and Minneapolis offices before settling in Cedar Rapids in 1965. In 1962 Jerry was united in marriage to Wanda Sorenson in Minneapolis.
Jerry is best known for his humble, hospitable manor and quick wit. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and singing in the church choir. In retirement, he served on the boards of the Linn County Chaplaincy and the Linn Community Food Bank. He was loved by and loved his family well.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Maurice; and Wanda (Sorenson) Anderson, his wife of 55 years.
Jerry is survived by his daughter, Lisa (Curt) McGowan of Herndon, Va.; his son, Ron (Terri) Anderson of Cedar Rapids; and his grandsons, Graham and Alec McGowan of Herndon, Va.
Memorials in Jerry's honor may be directed to The Church on Northland in Cedar Rapids and Hospice of Mercy in Cedar Rapids.
