Edward D. "Sonny" Hartl, 88, of rural Cedar Rapids, passed away at his home on Wednesday evening, Sept. 1, 2021. Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Tuesday at Saint Wenceslaus Catholic Church by the Rev. Dennis Conway. Burial will follow at Campbell Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Papich-Kuba Funeral Home East, 1228 Second St. SE, and after 9 a.m. Tuesday at the church. The rosary begins at 4 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Sonny is survived by his wife of 65 years, MaDonna; children, Cindy (Tim) Spivey, Tiffin, Mike (Jeri) Hartl, Mechanicsville, Kathy (Ken) Snyder, Ely, and Dennis (Jill) Hartl, Cedar Rapids; 14 grandchildren, Ted Spivey, Amy Yaukovitz, Jessica Spivey, Danyl Lown, Katie Spivey, Josh Hartl, Jeremy Hartl, Melissa Hartl, Michelle Snyder, Austin Snyder, Sarah Snyder, McKayla Hartl, McKenzie Hartl and Amelia Hartl; and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward F. and Dora (Mackey) Hartl; and sisters, Josephine Rozinek, Dorothy Vislisel, Rose Barnett and Margaret Barta.
Edward was born on Aug. 21, 1933, in rural Ely and was a lifelong resident of the Cedar Rapids area. He married MaDonna Meskimen on May 8, 1956, at Saint Wenceslaus Catholic Church. Sonny was a farmer his entire working life and never completely retired. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Sonny was a lifelong member of Saint Wenceslaus Catholic Church. He also belonged to American Legion St. Quentin Post 555 in Ely and Lodge Prokop Velky 137 C.S.A.
He enjoyed deer hunting, fishing and going to stock car races at all area dirt tracks. He avidly followed the NASCAR races on television.
Military graveside services will be conducted by American Legion St. Quentin Post 555.
Memorial donations may be given to Hospice of Mercy and Saint Wenceslaus Catholic Church.
