ALICE GUENN KEHOE
Iowa City
Alice Guenn Kehoe, 88, of Iowa City died Aug. 31, 2021, of heart related issues at Legacy Pointe Senior Living in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 3, at St. Wenceslaus Church (in the basement of the church), 618 Davenport, Iowa City, followed by a funeral Mass at 3 p.m. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City immediately following services. Please respect social distancing guidelines.
Guenn was born Dec. 22, 1932, the sixth of eight children raised by Edna and Harold Dunsmore on their Louisa County farm.
Upon graduation from Columbus Junction High School in 1950, Guenn headed to Iowa City to make her place in the world and where she met Dorrance 'Doc" Kehoe, a veteran of World War II who was working in the wholesale grocery industry. On one of their first dates, Doc asked if he could join a card game in the back room. Guenn said, "Fine. But I won't be here when you're done." He didn't and they married in 1954. In 1955, they started People's Grocery, a staple of the community until 1976.
After selling the store, Guenn worked at both the Morris Plan and ACT during her "retirement."
Guenn is survived by her children Eugene, Theresa (Bobby Bailey), Ginny Kehoe-Buzas (Paul Buzas), Donna Shank, John Kehoe, Kathy Collins (Mark) and Colleen Kehoe; as well as grandchildren, Sara Shank, Kate Giannini (Ryan), Austin (Sarah), Andrew (Kassi) and Kevin (Lauren) Bailey, Emma and Sam Buzas, Courtney (Garrett) Davis, Scott and Tom Collins, Sean Kehoe and Colton Kehoe; as well as seven great-grandchildren, Easton and Nolan Giannini; Brooks, Stella, Louise and Guenn Bailey and Collins Davis.
Guenn will also be missed by her surviving sisters, Dorothy Morrison and Edith Worrell, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Doc; siblings, Myrle Williams, Mary Rings, Allen, Russell and Kenny Dunsmore; and son-in-law, Bob Shank; as well as two grandchildren, Seth Kehoe and Dallas Kehoe.
Instead of flowers and plants, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Regina Foundation or Iowa City Hospice.
Guenn's family thanks the staffs at Legacy Pointe and Iowa City Hospice for their considerate and loving care.
