PATRICIA LEE (HEDGES) BURNETT
Marion
Patricia Lee (Hedges) Burnett, 93, of Marion, Iowa, died Aug. 25, 2021, at Hawkeye Care Center in Dubuque, Iowa, following a long illness. Visitation will be held from 9 to 10:45 a.m. Aug. 30, with a funeral to follow at 11 a.m. at Marion Christian Church, 1050 McGowan Blvd., Marion. Masks will be required inside the church. Burial will be in the Oakshade Cemetery in Marion.
Patricia was born Feb. 13, 1928, in Hedrick, Iowa, to Palmer and Doris (Hunting) Hedges. She was one of three daughters. Patricia graduated from Hedrick High School and Ottumwa Conservatory of Music in 1946. She attended Central Radio and Television School in Kansas City, Mo., and was a teletypist for Trans World Airlines.
During her time in Kansas City, she was swept off her feet by a tall, handsome war veteran who was also attending school there. She married Oliver R. "Bill" Burnett of Paducah, Ky., in June of 1948. They lived in Tennessee, Michigan and Ohio and welcomed a new child in each of those states, before moving to Marion in 1962. They transferred with Collins(Rockwell) to Melbourne, Fla., in 1985 and retired there. Bill died of cancer in 1994. Patricia returned to Marion in 1998.
Throughout her life, she was employed at various positions involving sales, bookkeeping and clerical work.
Patricia was a long-time member of Marion Christian Church and the Women's Fellowship. She served many years on the church board and as a Sunday school teacher. She was active in music all her life as a pianist, part-time organist, and church choir member. She was also a member of the Marion Musical Literary Club. She will be remembered for her petite size and large heart, being prone to frequent tears, her colloquial phrases, and beautiful handwriting. She loved tending flowers and watching the birds. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles and reading. She was attentive to the needs of others and kept in touch with family and friends, especially by sending cards and generous gifts.
Pat was preceded in death by her parents, Palmer and Doris (Hunting) Hedges of Hedrick, Iowa; and sisters, Elinor Hedges and Carol Summy; and her husband, Bill Burnett.
Surviving are a son, Steven Burnett (Gail) of Anaheim, Calif; and two daughters, Jacqueline Burnett (Ken Halstead) of Dubuque, Iowa, and Diana Knight (Patrick) of Marion, Iowa. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Jesse Mulert, Jordan Von Mulert, Emily McCarthy, Brittany Torres, Courteney Tunac-Voit and Elliott Knight. She was loved by 10 great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to Marion Christian Church.
