JOAN MOONEY
Iowa City
Joan Mooney, 69, of Iowa City, passed away peacefully on Aug. 17, 2021, with her family by her side.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 20, at Lensing Funeral Service in Iowa City, with a parish rosary service beginning at 3:15 p.m. Funeral Mass will begin Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter Catholic Church in Cosgrove, with Father Bob Cloos officiating. Interment will follow at St. Peter Cemetery in Cosgrove. Instead of flowers and plants, the family suggests memorials can be made to St. Peter's Cemetery.
Joan was born on Sept. 23, 1951, in Iowa City, to Earlis and Lucy (Files) Rohret. Following graduation from Clear Creek High School in 1969, she attended Iowa City Commercial College, graduating in 1970. Joan worked at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in the Department of Social Services as administrative services coordinator for over 45 years, retiring in 2015. During this time, she notarized thousands of documents for patients, families and staff.
Joan married the love her life, Larry Mooney, on June 8, 1974, in Cosgrove, and to this union, three children were born. She was a very loving wife, mother and sister. Family was the most important thing to her.
In her spare time, Joan enjoyed traveling, trout fishing, attending Renaissance Festivals and enjoying life on the acreage. She loved to cook and bake for her family at their many gatherings. She especially had fun making a big Easter dinner every year and her children and grandchildren always proved they had inherited the "Family Easter Gene" when they excelled at hunting and finding eggs. Joan was also a faithful member of St. Peter Catholic Church and belonged to the Altar and Rosary Society.
Joan is survived by her husband, Larry; children, Sara (Charles) Michalec, Steven (Nicole) Mooney and Trisha (Aaron) Otterbeck; grandchildren, Ella, Hannah, Lucia, Sydney, Carter and Maxwell; siblings, Linda Vikel, Karen (Al) Peterson, Kathleen (Bill) Mahon, Margery (Jeff) Amelon, Gary Rohret and Amy (Curt) Bowman; as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family members.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother-in-law, Gerald Vikel.
Joan's family would like to thank Dr. Suneja and Dr. Monga, as well as the entire staff at The Oldorf Hospice House for the compassion and care they showed Joan and her family during this difficult time.
