Marjorie Akers went to be with the Lord and her heavenly family Jan. 27, 2021.
She was born Oct. 7, 1929, In Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Merle C and Blanche L Grimm in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She married James L. Akers on May 22, 1948. Marjorie worked for the Cedar Rapids School Food Service 35 years and retired as manager of Jefferson High School. She served as President of the Iowa School Food Service Association from 1972-1973. Being manager of the school food service, she loved cooking and trying out new recipes for the family.
Marjorie lived in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for 84 years and then has made Springfield, Mo., her home since 2014. She was a charter member of Hobby Club in Cedar Rapids where she extended her love for knitting and crafts with her friends. She was a member of St. James United Methodist Church.
She dearly loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed playing Canasta and other card games, and was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan and, most recently, Kansas City Chiefs fan.
Survivors include her daughter, Victoria Darrow and son-in-law, Larry Darrow (since passed May 2021) of Fremont Hills, Mo.; brother, Howard Grimm (Gladys) of Altoona, Iowa; two grandchildren, Jaren Pippitt (Greg) of St. Joseph, Mo., and John Darrow (Becky) of Springfield, Mo.; four great-grandchildren, Pierce, Wyatt, Keegan and Mackenzie; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Merle C. and Blanche L. Grimm; her husband, James L. Akers; her daughter, Kathryn J. Dunlap; three brothers, Harold, Robert and Gene; and her sister, Donna.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Aug. 21, 2021, at 11 a.m.
The family would like to thank all the many family and friends who over the years have shown love and concern for Marjorie.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mercy Hospice of Springfield, Mo., or your favorite charity.
