Fred Johnson, 83, of Shellsburg, died Monday, Aug. 9, 2021, at Hospice House, Hiawatha. Celebration of Life: 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 13, at Knight's of Columbus 909, 1620 E Ave. NE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52402. Private burial: Parker's Grove Cemetery, Shellsburg. Arrangements by Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his children, Tim (Jill) Johnson, Tina (Shawn) Lillie, Tammy Johnson and Trudy (Gerard) Wagner; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Harlan Johnson; and many extended family members.
Fredrick Mac Johnson was born July 26, 1938, in Mount Vernon, to Carl and Anna (Pfeifle) Johnson. He graduated from Franklin High School in 1956. Fred worked as a machinist for Collins Radio, owned Hiawatha Construction Co. and Strawberry Acres, which later became Hiawatha Garden Center. Fred was a realtor for a number of years and worked as a building inspector for Linn County. Mostly, Fred was an avid gardener. He tended a large garden in rural Shellsburg, and sold the produce at the local farmer's markets. Fred was instrumental in beginning the Noelridge and Hiawatha farmer's markets. He also enjoyed visiting casinos, fishing, traveling around the country with family, feeding the birds and squirrels, and watching the Hawkeyes.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Theresa; grandson, Justin; sister, Donna; brothers, Harley and Marvin; and dogs, Buck I, II and III.
