AMY LYNN EVENSON
Iowa City
Amy Lynn Evenson, 53, of Iowa City, Iowa, passed away Aug. 6, 2021, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
Amy was born Sept. 21, 1967, in Cedar Falls, Iowa, the daughter of Wayne Evenson and Gloria Holtkamp Evenson. Amy grew up in Cedar Falls and in her teens was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma which she overcame. She went on to graduate from Cedar Falls High School, University of Iowa (BA) and the University of Northern Illinois Law School (JD).
Amy moved back to Iowa in 1993 and eventually ended up in Iowa City, where she met her husband, Douglas Fredericks. They were married at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Iowa City on Dec. 27, 1996. Amy was told early in her adult life she wouldn't be able to conceive children due to her cancer disease and treatment, but Amy was determined to have kids. Amy beat the odds, as only she could, and gave birth to two beautiful daughters, Alexa Renee (20) and Abigail Elizabeth (16). Amy fought her disease for a long time so she could see Alexa and Abbie grow up. Amy was so proud of her daughters and their accomplishments. Amy was the best mother two daughters could ever have. Even with her illness depriving her of energy, Amy attended all their school activities from sports to band concerts. Those were her proudest moments seeing her daughters excel at what they loved doing.
Amy was a loving wife, mother, sister and friend. She treated all with respect and kindness. She was passionate about justice and equality, and her compassion shined through in her many contributions to charity. Her intense love for family made her the glue of loved ones, and there was nothing she loved more than catching up with relatives and friends. Amy was a devoted pet owner all her life, and her animals were equally as devoted to her loving nature. She always said, "a house is not a home without a pet to love."
Amy practiced law at Larson Evenson Law Firm for over 25 years. She was as supportive, loyal and talented attorney. She helped families and children through difficult times with skill and heart. She made lives better. Judges appointed her to their most difficult cases, knowing she would fight for her clients, often the most disadvantaged among us. Amy also specialized in helping accident victims, fighting to help people who had been injured regain dignity and get justice. She took cases no one else would take and won them. Amy always fought for the people who had the least.
Amy is survived by her husband of 25 years, Douglas Fredericks; daughters, Alexa and Abbie Fredericks; brothers, Dave Evenson of Cedar Falls, Matt Evenson (Christine) of Medford, Ore., and John Evenson of Oshkosh, Wis.; sister, Beth Phillips (Bill) of Iowa City; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Wayne and Gloria Evenson of Cedar Falls.
Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 15, at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 16, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Iowa City. Father Stephen Witt will officiate.
