Spotted in the 32nd Street NE, Cedar Rapids, Hy-Vee parking lot - a little red Porsche 914 with the personalized license plate, "RED HEN."
What does it mean? A red car with a female driver? Someone shopping for hens? Someone with a really strong work ethic?
Yes, when I think of red hen, I think of "The Little Red Hen," the children's story that emerged in the U.S. in the 1940s, based on a Russian tale, that is often used to teach the work ethic. (To refresh your memory, the Little Red Hen plants wheat, harvests it, threshes it, mills it and finally bakes it into bread, asking for help along the way which is never given. So she only shares the bread with her own chicks.)
As Wikipedia says, it's also frequently rewritten by pundits and bloggers to illustrate their favorite points.
I'm not really trying to make any point here, unless it's the simple fact I like to keep an eye out for personalized license plates and wonder what kind of person drives that particular vehicle.
"RED HEN" on a red Porsche fits the bill.
