There's a decrease in teams, a change in format at the Cedar Rapids Washington Invitational volleyball tournament Saturday.Fourteen teams are entered, down from the customary 16. They'll compete in two pools of seven, with each team playing four pool matches.
Pool A: Cedar Rapids Jefferson, Oak Park (Mo.), Solon, Davis County, Cedar Rapids Washington, Cedar Rapids Xavier, Johnston.
Pool B: Linn-Mar, Cedar Rapids Prairie, North Fayette, Oskaloosa, Marion, Davenport Central, Dyersville Beckman.Two teams from each pool will advance to a four-team championship bracket, which is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. (it won't).Two teams from each pool will advance to a four-team consolation bracket, which is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. (it won't).Finish fifth or lower in your pool and you have one consolation match for 9th, 11th or 13th.The tournament has five ranked teams, including 4A No. 1 Johnston, the defending state champion. Prairie and Xavier are ranked 11th and 14th in 4A, Marion is No. 4 in 3A, Solon is 10th in 2A:Our championship-bracket picks: Johnston over Prairie and Marion over Oak Park in the semifinals; Johnston over Marion in the final.
