Forest Evashevski (with coat) walks off the field with Jerry Reichow (#25) following Iowa's Big Ten loss to the MInnesota Gophers, 22-20, on November 13, 1954. Some 15,000 Hawkeye fans attended the football game at Memorial Stadium in Minneapolis. Memorial stadium stood from 1924-1981. Iowa lost to Notre Dame the following week, 34-18, to finish the 1954 season at 5-4 overall, and 4-3 in the conference. "Evy," a Michigan alum, was Iowa's head coach from 1952-1960, compiling a 52-27-4 record and two Rose Bowl victories during that time. He also was the school's athletic director from 1961-1970. Reichow, a Decorah native who played quarterback and defensive back for the Hawkeyes from 1953-1955, would go on to play quarterback and tight end in the NFL for nine seasons. He played for the Detroit Lions from 1956-1959, the Philadelphia Eagles in 1960, and the Minnesota Vikings from 1961-1964. Iowa used several different helmet and uniform color combinations in 1954, and few wore protective face masks. All college football players were required to play offense and defense in the mid-1950s.
