Kennedy's Sheldon among Young Invitational winners

PilcherThe Gazette kj.pilcher@gazettecommunications.comCEDAR FALLS - Cedar Rapids Kennedy's Ryan Sheldon and Iowa City High's Kevin Harp won titles Saturday at the Keith Young Invitational.Sheldon's second-period takedown and an escape in the third sealed the 3-2 win over third-ranked Sunichiro Uno of Bettendorf at 140 pounds,"Now I truly know how good I can be," Sheldon said. "I know what to expect from myself. I have higher goals the rest of the season."Harp traded escapes with Don Bosco's Cory Becker in regulation but scored nearfall points in double overtime to win 4-1 at 285 pounds."It's a confidence booster," said Harp, now 5-0. "It's something to build on."Kennedy's Ryan Shupp beat top-ranked Alex Schwerdtfeger, 1-0, in the semifinals before losing to Don Bosco's Jake Thome, 3-2, in the final. The Cougars finished seventh with 90 1/2 points.Class 1A top-ranked Don Bosco had seven finalists and three champs to win the team title with 222 1/2 points. Waverly-Shell Rock, No. 1 in 3A, was second, winning two of five finals matches and scoring 175 points.
