U.S. Cellular network supervisor Jim Rauch of Cedar Rapids holds a cell phone on Wednesday, December 18, 1991, in front of the company's switching computer in a tower at the corner of 12th Street and 26th Avenue SW. Iowa got its first statewide cellular phone system the following day when U.S. Cellular officially turned on its Mid-America Network, allowing its customers to automatically receive long-distance calls via this computer.
