The tough part about rankings

Jan. 26, 2009 10:39 pm, Updated: Apr. 2, 2014 4:05 pm
For those who don't read them, I rank the top five wrestlers from all classes from The Gazette's newspaper circulation area. Here's why I don't like doing rankings, even though they are only created to stir conversation. At 189 pounds, my latest rankings were 1. Tomas Lira, West Liberty; 2. Jason Shupp, C.R. Kennedy, 3. Casey DeHoedt, C.R. Jefferson, 4. Carl Broghammer, West Delaware, 5. Jordan Kaiser, Benton Community. These were OK until Carl Broghammer had to win the Louisa-Muscatine tournament Saturday. Kaiser is locked in at #5, but here's why it gets hairy:Broghammer beat West Burlington-Notre Dame's Stewart Holloway in the finals. Holloway has defeated Lira by decision and Shupp by major dec. Shupp has beaten DeHoedt head-to-head. DeHoedt handled Tyler Wingerson of Fort Dodge in the finals of Jefferson's J-Hawk Invite on Jan. 27. Wingerson beat Broghammer of the semifinals in that same tournament.Broghammer has an edge on Lira and Shupp due to common opponents. Lira has an edge on Shupp due to the differential of loss to Holloway, Shupp has an edge on DeHoedt by head-to-head results and DeHoedt has an edge on Broghammer due to common opponents.I'm taking the stalled seed meeting approach and drawing ping-pong balls for order. Check them Friday to see how they fall.
