Ferentz on Chiefs' radar?
Feb. 4, 2009 4:44 pm
Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz on Wednesday addressed the lingering rumor that he might leave Iowa for the Kansas City Chiefs.
"Unless I get hit by a truck, I'll see you on March 25," Ferentz said about the first day of spring football practice. "If I get hit by a truck, I can't help you there. But my plans are to be here, and I said that back on New Year's Day."
Kansas City Chiefs General Manager Scott Pioli formerly worked in front-office roles in Cleveland and Baltimore concurrently with Ferentz, who served as an assistant coach. That connection led to rampant speculation that Ferentz would join Pioli in Cleveland or Kansas City. Pioli, a former vice president for player personnel in New England, interviewed in Cleveland last month before accepting the general manager's position in Kansas City.
"Scott's a great friend and I know he'll do a great job selecting a coach for the Kansas City Chiefs," Ferentz said. "I'm a fan of where my friends are, so I'm a huge fan of the Kansas City Chiefs. But I'm a huge fan of Iowa, too, and I'm looking forward to a lot of good things ahead.
"We're excited about next year. It will be good to get going."
