Are You Aware of Flooding?

DES MOINES -Governor Culver will do some of his work from Iowa's original state house on Wednesday as he signs a proclamation and hosts a series of meetings at the Old Capitol in Iowa City.

The Governor's visit will begin in the original Governor's Office, where the Governor will sign a proclamation declaring March 2009 as Flood Awareness Month in Iowa.

Next, he will hold a meeting with local officials from Iowa City, Coralville, JohnsonCounty, and the University of Iowa to discuss their recovery efforts following last year's floods, and what assistance is still needed to rebuild as well as prevent future disasters.

Finally, the Governor's visit will conclude with a town hall meeting in the old Senate Chamber. This will be an opportunity for local residents to visit with Governor Culver and local officials about disaster recovery efforts and other issues.

Flood Awareness Month?

Uh, I think we're on month nine of Flood Awareness Decade around these parts. I'm glad the governor is coming to Eastern Iowa, but didn't his staff think about how this proclamation would seem a little odd to frustrated people here who would rather be aware of just about anything else. How about Recovery Awareness Month?

Sure, you can never have too much awareness, I guess. Correction,  31 feet of flood awareness can be very problematic.

I just hope that Flood Awareness Month doesn't turn out like The Year of the River.
