To Every Sport There is A Season - A Fans Perspective

Mar. 17, 2009 10:01 pm
Spring is in the air, and you know what that means sports fans... yep...It's Track Season! Or at least I THINK it's track season....I see the team out there running through town, warming up, doing a few laps on the track (when it's not a bog) and of course, there they are in the gym, doing some lif...Oh wait...that's not the track team...they are standing around waiting because the softball team is in the gym pitching....they could use the other gym maybe...except no...the volleyball team is in there....HOLD UP. Didn't we just confirm that it's TRACK season? Why yes...yes we did. So...why is the softball team already pitching, and the volleyball team still volleying? Softball & Baseball do not start until May. It says so right in the "rules". Volleyball, you had your turn. The Basketball trophies have been handed out. So all you ball teams, please get outta the way, the track team is coming through!Seriously coaches....if it's not your season...come on....please....BACK OFF. It's not right to put one competitive team out of practice IN season, while another one takes over a practice area OUT of season. In fact, it's not right that those kids are already practicing for an upcoming sport, instead of participating in the current season.Kids should be able to go from sport to sport seamlessly, and enjoy the time spent in each one, without all the in-fighting over who gets to practice when, and who will be able to come to practice. There is absolutely no legitimate reason why a good athlete shouldn't be able to letter in three or more sports each year, if they so desire.Realistically, very few of these kids are going to go on to play college ball, almost none of them will play pro ball, and frankly, most of them won't be championship high school teams....so can't we just stop acting like every kid who puts on a pair of sweats is in training to be an Olympian, and just remember they are high schoolers playing competitive sports for four years? Let them play a season at a time. This is High School...where kids should have the luxury of playing or participating in several sports, and coaches should encourage their athletes to be well rounded, and participate in other sports...particularly track,. Yes, I said track. Yeah...it's not a glory sport. Yeah, it's not always an "all about the team" sport. Yeah, it's an arduous sport that isn't for the weak of spirit, and it has long been a sport that helped "players" get in shape, and be better, faster, stronger, and more agile in their game. You know who steals the most bases? A sprinter, that's who. You know who runs a kick-off ball 80 yards for a touchdown? A track star, that's who. You know who can jump outta the house to block a shot, or spike a ball? A high/long jumper, thats who. You know who can stay on the court, or the field through 4 quarters without tiring? A distance runner, that's who.So Iowa High School coaches, PLEASE get your basketball players, football players, softball players, baseball players, and volleyball players out on the track, to condition, train, run, and become better all around athletes....because you had your time, and now....there are runners, jumpers, and throwers in the house!Runners to your mark....now set.....GO
