Linn County hits 100 COVID-19 deaths

Linn County on Friday reported its 100th coronavirus-related death.

Linn was one of two counties reporting an additional death within the 24-hour period ending at 11 a.m. Friday. The other death was in Howard County in northeast Iowa.

Statewide, 1,208 people have died since the first COVID-19 cases were diagnosed in Iowa on March 8.

Linn County reported 45 new cases within the 24-hour period.

The county's seven-day average of new cases is 48, up from Thursday's 46 and the most ever reported.

The positivity rate was 12.93 percent.

Since March, Linn County has reported 3,400 cases of the virus in an estimated population of 226,706.

Across the state, 778 new cases were reported Friday, out of 6,023 tests, for a positivity rate of 12.92 percent.

Iowa's seven-day average of new cases decreased 44 to 688, the state's lowest mark since Aug. 25.

As of Friday, 72,798 COVID-19 cases have been confirmed statewide.

Johnson County had 32 new cases, with a positivity rate of 10.13 percent.

The county's seven-day average of new cases decreased for the ninth consecutive day to 58, the lowest level since Aug. 24. The county's positivity rate is 10.13 percent.

Since March, Johnson County has confirmed 4,732 cases of the virus.

Story County had 51 new virus cases; a seven-day average of 46, its lowest since Aug. 25; and a positivity rate of 17.53 percent. Since March, the county has confirmed 3,064 cases.

Black Hawk County reported 28 new cases; a seven-day average of 30, its lowest since Aug. 26; and a positivity rate of 14.66 percent. The county has had 4,118 cases since March.

Across the state, hospitalizations decreased by 21 to 281, the fewest since Aug. 23. The number of patientsin intensive care declined by two to 83. The number of patients on ventilators increased by two to 36.

Long-term care

Three long-term care facilities reported outbreaks of three of more COVID-19 cases among residents and staff. Currently, there are 34 outbreaks in Iowa long-term care facilities.

The new outbreaks are at Simpson Memorial Home in Muscatine County, 19 cases; Glen Haven Village in Mills County, 6; and New Hampton Nursing and Rehab Center in Chickasaw County, 3.

Locally, Winslow House Care Center added 12 new cases for a total of 34. Hiawatha Care Center added three new cases for 14, and Solon Nursing Care Center remained at 38 cases.
