Smith back for Kernels, takes loss

Pitcher Will Smith was activated from the disabled list Thursday and took the loss as the Cedar Rapids Kernels were swept by the South Bend Silver Hawks, 10-8, in South Bend.
Smith, a 19-year-old lefty considered one of the Los Angeles Angels top 30 prospects, went on the DL in mid August after suffering a hamstring injury in the first inning of his second start of the season. Thursday, he gave up eight hits and six earned runs in three innings.
To make room for him on active roster, left-handed pitcher Chris Armstrong was placed on the temporarily inactive list.
